I love fruit stands and farmers markets! Every time I stop the car to buy apples, my kids want to jump out and help me point and ask, "How much?" There is something magical about this time of the year, when the earth is giving forth food in abundance, that speaks to children.

Last Friday I took my kids to the Thanksgiving Point Farmers market (http://www.thanksgivingpoint.com/events/farmers_market.html) and they loved every moment of it. From the colorful merchants to the uniquely colored tomatoes (we bought both yellow and black in addition to the traditional red) to their favorite part of the market, the free samples in abundance, the kids loved it!

We also got a business card from the man who sold us the tomatoes for a pick-your-own opportunity at his farm. If I can find that information, I'll post it for others to take kids and participate in the joy of harvest. Do you have a favorite fruit stand? Pick-your-own farm? Farmer's market? Pack the kids in the car and head north, south or just a few blocks away to experience some of the diverse fun that Utah has to offer this time of year. For a full list of activities this week, please check the calendar page.

1. Head South!
If you want to head to southern Utah this summer, this is the week to do it! The Utah Shakespearean Festival begins this week in Cedar City and has great fun for adults and kids alike. I was just leaving the library about an hour ago when we spied the festivities and decided to drive by. The "drive by" turned into a "walk by" when we saw a large firetruck parked on the north east side with kids swarming all around it.

As we walked over from the car, we got to watch the carnival equipment being set up all around us. Good smells already filled the morning air. At the fire truck, there was a very friendly fire fighter on hand to answer all of my son's questions. My son got to sit up inside the truck and look at all the gauges (after a brief incident of falling out of the truck--luckily the fire fighter and I were both right there to catch him!)

The fire fighter walked all around the truck with us, answering all of our questions and showing us how everything worked. From hoses to pressure gauges to the first aid kit and the button that lowered the ladder down we saw it all! I learned a lot of interesting things myself and my son was soaking in information as quickly as he could. When we were done looking all around the truck, the fire fighter had us stand about 20 feet away and he turned on the lights and the siren. He asked my son if he wanted to sit inside again and blow the air horn, but my son wasn't quite brave enough for that.

An ambulance was parked next to the fire truck. An EMT was on hand to open up the doors and let me son look at everything inside. He was just about to show us the different compartments on the outside of the ambulance when they got called to help somebody. A big THANK YOU to Orem City for giving our kids a chance to get up close and learn about their community. A larger fire truck and an Apache Helicopter will be on hand this afternoon for kids to explore. (1:00 for the large fire truck and 2:00 for the helicopter.)

Summerfest officially opens at 2:00 this afternoon with carnival games, boutique booths and entertainment. Different groups will be taking the stage on the hour at 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 and 8:00. Starting at 2:00, there will also be a car show at the city center.

Saturday will kick off with a 5K race and Rotary Breakfast. The carnival, food and boutique booths, emergency vehicles, entertainment and car show will begin at 10:00 a.m. and continue all day.

Starting at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, there will be a children's parade, followed by the Grand Parade. (Listen online at 96.7!) The evening will conclude with a fabulous fireworks display around 10:00 p.m. The fireworks will be set off at the City Center park. You can go there to watch the display or find a spot nearby with a good line of sight.

All of this information (and more!) is available at http://summerfest.orem.org/. Today I checked the calendar! Festival of Living Traditions in SLC, a car show at Thanksgiving Point, and a Bird Festival. Tomorrow there's the Kids Club stuff at Maceys and a Rabbit Show at the State Fairpark.

Who would have known about all this stuff? I didn't until I started doing a little research. You know what? It took hours to find everything on my new Google Calendar. And when I say "hours" I mean "days." No wonder I've been a boring Mom! It's so much easier to sit back and surf the internet while the kids watch the latest Blues Clues reruns. But if I can just click the calendar and see what's happening? No work at all--plus I get to do it while I'm surfing the internet.

Bingo. That's what I call a win-win.

Well, it's a win-win for you because that's how it is. Just bookmark this site (http://www.funtodo.org/) or the calendar directly at (http://www.funtodo.org/calendar.php) and you're just a click away from being The Mom In The Know. I'll keep it updated for you and all you have to do is get out and have with your kids, or your grandkids, or nephews, or... well, you catch my drift.

And I'll keep slaving away to find the coolest, funnest stuff to do here in Utah that is Kid-Friendly. If you find something cool that I haven't listed yet, PLEASE drop me a line! Email me at feedback@funtodo.org and I'll get it added to our database of cool stuff and/or the calendar of special events.

Have fun and let me know how you like what we've put together!
